Where do you take a date on Valentines?

Did you know the first Valentine’s Day was in year 496? It originated from a Roman festival in February, where people would often find love and get married as part of a tradition. This idea was later celebrated by Christians when the church decided to use the occasion as a Remembrance Day for St. Valentine; a Roman Priest who arranged for couples to wed in secret when it was against the Roman law.  And we’ve been celebrating love on February 14th ever since!

So, that’s over 1,500 years of springtime romantic gestures and messages of love. Surely every possible date night has happened? Well we’ve found a few ideas that might have been missed! Take a look at these unorthodox date suggestions, you might find the perfect activity for you and your significant other to celebrate your love. And if not, we have some fool proof romantic classics listed too.

No.1 - Cat Café

Does your partner love cats? Maybe too much? Or is your bff a little bit of a crazy cat lady in need of a besties date? This will be the purrrfect place to take them.

Since the first Cat Café opened in Taipei in 1998, the idea has spread to most other countries, with over 150 throughout Japan. We only have around 15 in the UK so far, but hopefully there is one near you! Here are links to our favourites:

Lady Dina's Cat Emporium in London

Kitty Cafe in Leeds and Nottingham

Cat Cafe in Manchester

Mog on the Tyne in Newcastle

Maison De Moggy in Edinburgh

Pause Cat Cafe in Bournemouth

No. 2 - A Hot Air Balloon Ride

Purchasing experience day vouchers and creating memories can be the best gift. Take a look on www.buyagift.co.uk for loads of great ideas, including hot air balloon rides all over the country.

No. 3 – Escape Rooms

Escape Rooms are becoming more and more popular for a fun group activity or team building exercise. It could be a great Valentines date too. Spend an hour working on your communication and cooperation skills! Most cities have escape rooms, so you shouldn’t be too far from one wherever you are in the UK.

No. 4 – Roller Skating or Ice Skating

Both of these can be great fun but may not be your cup of tea. You don’t have to be a figure skater to have a good time, but you might feel safer with a sitting down date if you don’t have great balance!

No. 5 – A Tandem Bike Ride for Two

Another teamwork activity – a tandem bike ride with some beautiful scenery could be a great activity to do together on Valentine’s Day.

P.S. Take a look at our Personalised Bicycles Posters for the perfect gift to remember the date!

The Classics

No. 6 – Dinner and a Movie

You can’t really go wrong with dinner and a movie… Unless you choose the wrong restaurant and movie! If you know your partner well enough to know which cuisine and genre they will love, then go ahead and surprise them. If you’re not sure, maybe make a joint decision.

No. 7 – A Cosy night in

A cosy night in may be just what you and your partner need if you’re both always too busy for date night. Put your pjs on and order a takeaway! You’ll finally have time to catch up on the Netflix series or movie you’ve both been wanting to watch together.

No. 8 – Double Date

Why not double date with your friend and their partner? Activities such as the escape rooms might be fun with more people – couple vs couple or boys vs girls? You could turn the evening into a battle of the sexes!

No. 9 – Aquarium or the Zoo?

The Aquarium and the Zoo are both great days out, or a local animal sanctuary. This one can be weather dependant though, something indoors might be better in the rain!

No. 10 – Explore a new town, book a hotel

If you’re feeling like doing something special this year, maybe book a hotel in a town or city you haven’t visited before and explore new places.

Hopefully one of these ideas will suit you or help you think of your perfect date! Good luck planning!
